The rock should be large enough to fill most of the surface that attracts the birds. It does not have to be sharp sharp, but humped enough so that building a nest is difficult. Since you will be under it at times, maybe wire it so it will not fall. Or a wood pyramid?

I was a hotel manager at a year round beach resort. The center section had 3 stories of ten rooms each. Some purple finches decided to build nests on top of every single light fixture outside of all ten rooms. The guests loved it and the momma birds let people get really close to the babies when they fledged PS: Lovely flowers!! (Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

Oh yea you got to spend time with your kids and your little guy. What beautiful flowers you got there. You know birds are very protective over their nests, just like us moms are over our kiddos. I hope you have a great Monday hun..

Dang I have never seen a nest in the grass like that or a wood pile, I have several starlings building in the barn, and some barn swallows, I will find a few killdeers out in the field, but they seem to avoid my driveway which is over a quarter mile long. Have a great day and enjoy the weather. Anything worth doing is worth doing right

Sometimes a pointed rock placed where birds build nests will be enough to stop them from continuing to do so. Another alternative might fastening mesh wire to the rafters that span the light fixture. Maybe block the space between rafters above and below the light so that it does not require a large amount of mesh.
